life and gears

It's the last week of teaching here, and people are saying that the end is nigh - which I had thought was usually reserved for bad things.
My dancing end is quite nigh as well - SUSCDF on Saturday, last teaching of the term next week - at least until the holidays when I have to think about trip choreography, but at least there's a nice blank week then to do it in.

This, of course, doesn't mean that things get any quieter - work is getting quite hectic with end of term handins and planning for next semester and the exams about to start, and otherwise my next 3 weeks include runrig concerts and christmas parties and the carol concert and an adventure to Germany with phlebas and other fun things.

Can someone who knows about bikes please explain gears to me? As far as I can tell, there are gears where everything is really hard work and you don't go anywhere much, and gears where you pedal and pedal and pedal and don't go anywhere much, and not really anything in between.
I am not sure if this is a problem with gears or the bike or my legs or Edinburgh.
