Hearts of Oak

Another stray Collingwood mention - for a man I think of as mostly famous for not being famous enough, he does turn up in some unexpected places.

This time it's Simon Schama writing for the BBC about British oaks:
Naval officers on leave, like Collingwood, went around surreptitiously scattering acorns from holes in his breeches in the parks of his unsuspecting hosts.

But he would be upset by the news of Acute Oak Decline - and I'm sorry too, although I'm not attached to oaks the way I am to, say, rowans - I think they're more a part of the English landscape.
(But it also seems to have been attacking rhododendrons, for whatever reason, and it's welcome to them.)
